Mosquito Control

Office picture with logoWelcome to our page. West Baton Rouge Mosquito Control is a department of The West Baton Rouge Parish Council. The department was formed in 2002 in response to the introduction and rapid expansion of West Nile Virus in our state.

Our mission is to protect the citizens of West Baton Rouge Parish from the threat of mosquito-borne disease and to combat nuisance mosquito problems to improve the quality of life for everyone in our community. To achieve our mission, we operate on an IMP (integrated pest management) basis, meaning that we employ multiple science-based principles to control mosquitoes. These principles include; mosquito surveillance, disease testing, larval mosquito control, adult mosquito control, source reduction, resistance testing, and public education.

Our staff is committed to providing the citizens of our parish with the best measure of mosquito control and disease surveillance that we can with the resources we are given. There is a wealth of information on this site with topics ranging from detailed information on mosquito-borne diseases to advice on keeping your yard and home mosquito-free. However, if you have a question that is unanswered by the content here, please call our office at 225-214-5900 to speak with a staff member.

Complaints

As a rule, we do not do individual yard inspections/spray treatments. However, if you are experiencing an abnormal mosquito infestation or would like to report an area that is breeding mosquitoes you can call our office at 225-214-5900. We will assign the next available team member to investigate the issue.

Spray Truck Schedule and Procedure

Our nighttime spray truck operations are activated primarily in response to mosquito trap counts and disease testing results. Mosquito surveillance results are obtained weekly during trapping season (March/April - November) and determine when and where we concentrate our control efforts. We post these results to our Facebook page weekly during the trapping season.

During normal control operations, our spray trucks begin spraying at sunset and spray till 11:30 p.m. Spray truck operations are usually conducted Monday through Wednesday or Monday through Thursday depending on the number of areas that are being treated. Please note, that these standard operating procedures are subject to change in response to emergency situations such as control measures activated after a hurricane, tropical storm, or a widespread disease outbreak.

Spray Zone and Surveillance Maps

We post a link to our GIS spray zone map weekly which indicates which spray zones are scheduled for truck operations during the week and which zones have disease-positive mosquito samples, if any. The map is searchable by address, so you can determine which spray zone you are in. You can access the map through our Facebook page or by clicking on the map link on the right side of this page.

All of our mosquito surveillance collections and subsequent disease testing samples are submitted to a statewide database called VectorSurv. The database has a publicly accessible map which shows local and nationwide data. You can access the map by clicking on the link on the right side of this page.

Social Media

During the height of mosquito season (March through November) we post information on our Facebook page often. The information we post includes helpful articles on mosquito-borne diseases, weekly surveillance results, tips for homeowners, disease testing results, and updates on spray truck schedules. We also post informative video content on our YouTube page. You can access our social media content by clicking on the links on the right side of this page.
